Today’s video is a little different because it is not the typical workout video that you may be used to seeing. We are switching it up by having some training on how to protect yourself in a fight with self defense. Jeff is going to go over the training he has had and learned, to help us be prepared if we ever need to use self-defense. So, let’s get started with this video tutorial on self defense-how to protect yourself in a fight.

The first thing is..if you can, don’t fight. Try to avoid altercations if possible. Read the person’s body language, and keep your hands up in a non-aggressive way if someone is trying to fight you. Having your hands up and open shows that you don’t want to fight. This also allows you to react quickly if you need to block a punch or to throw a punch if you need to. You need to be able to respond quickly! Most of the fights are from just talking, so try to use words to avoid a fight breaking out.

Now, say using words didn’t deescalate the situation, now there is a fight. If there is a fight, what do you do? If there are 3-4 guys, one of them is typically the alfa. So you need to take him out first. There is very viscous, which you would go after the eyes. There is vicious, which would be going at the groin area. And there is semi-viscous, which would be the chin. To catch the alfa off guard, pretend you are going to use your knee to hit the groin area, then punch or slap in the jaw. Once they see your knee, they are going to lower their hands, which will expose their face.

If the person coming at you has a weapon, use any helpful object you may have to help defend yourself. Whether you have a belt as your defense weapon, or you can use your shoe to protect yourself if they have a knife. Put the shoe on your hand to block the attacks with the knife.

What if the fight is already close range? Typically arm punches are ineffective if you are locked in arms. So you can either use a headbutt, or throw your elbows into their head. Your elbows are very useful in a close fight.

Hitting with an open palm can be safer, especially if you are older because throwing a punch to the head may break your hands or make you not want to use it for the rest of the fight if need be. Try to aim for the jaw to make it more effective. You want to hit with your palm to make sure there's more force hitting them. Legs are also great for fighting because it helps you keep some distance.

If you have time, go and take some classes to get some lessons in self-defense. Keep it simple if you are in a fight, don’t try to do the fancy stuff that you see on t.v.
