Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says people should only apply for exemptions if they “genuinely have compassionate grounds” and should be patient.
“I would respectfully ask people unless you genuinely have compassionate grounds, please don’t apply,” he said.
“I want to get those settings changed, I want to get Victorians home as soon as possible, but only those who have got a genuine exceptional circumstance the answer will be yes; the rest sadly it will be no.”
Mr Andrews said the wait times would be long for applications to be answered as each one is considered individually.
He also said people in New South Wales may have their applications rejected as “the virus is running wild” in Sydney.
“The people in the health department make those judgements, and sadly we are having to say no to a lot of people who have a very strong case,” Mr Andrews said.
“Difficult choices have to be made and there’s no getting around that.”
