Off the coast of southern Japan, near the island of Iwo Jima, the Kita Ioto volcano just produced its first eruption in 77 years. This eruption occurred at shallow depths, generating a plume of ash which shot more than 6,000 meters into the atmosphere. This new volcanic is occurring in close proximity to the site of the largest explosive volcanic eruption of 2021, where the Fukutoku Okanoba volcano ejected 350 million tons of tephra, creating vast fields of pumice in the ocean which drifted all the way to Kagoshima, causing damage to several of it ports. So, is a similarly large explosive eruption imminent? This video will answer this question and discuss the ongoing eruption.
