The Australian’s Greg Sheridan says China’s “massive clampdown” on religion - particularly Christianity - is because it sees it as an alternative explanation for life and purpose than what is espoused by the Chinese Communist Party.
“It is one of the most astonishing stories of our time, in 1949 when the Communist Party took power there were three or four million Christians in China, now there’s somewhere between 60 million and 120 million,” he told Sky News Australia.
Mr Sheridan said the suppression of religion in China has been largely in “the last few years” under President Xi Jinping.
“I argue a case in this book that the Chinese Communist Party is a religious organisation with its own metaphysics, its own total explanation, its sacred scriptures," he said.
“That’s why it hates Christianity so much, it sees it an as alternative explanation for meaning, purpose, and life.”
